Racehorse Aftercare Spotlight
Thoroughbred Aftercare continues to grow in importance and visibility throughout our sport. Working with thoroughbred trainers at various race tracks throughout the Nation, and here in Arizona, CANTER, [the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses] via its website, provides a means for the public to view racehorses that are available for purchase or adoption. Canter volunteers take video and still photographs to provide perspective buyers with an “introduction” to available horses. Mr. Miller will explain how the CANTER process works and what horsemen and women can do to assist in the placement process. There will be time for questions at the conclusion of the presentation.

“Growing the Fan Base – Do It or Die!”
Growing the fan base is essential for the racing industry to survive, let alone prosper. It is a well-accepted industry “truism”, at least by some, that our fans are old and dying and there are no young fans to replace them. Today’s Panel will explore this topic from several perspectives. Eric Halstrom will discuss creative programs that Canterbury Park has developed and implemented not only to get fans to the track but also to get them educated about wagering and horse ownership. Tom LaMarra will explore the role print media such as The Blood-Horse (in hard copy and online) does play and can play to encourage racing fans. Robin Richards looks at growing the fan base from the perspective of the owner/breeder. Sean Clancy will examine the use of the internet to increase fans and fan involvement. There will be time for questions at the conclusion of the presentations by the Panel.

Out of Competition Testing Forum
Out-of-Competition-Testing (OOTC) is seen by some within the thoroughbred horse racing industry as an essential piece of the medication regulatory scheme to improve racing integrity. Is OOTC an effective deterrent; is it cost effective; and can OOTC be effectively enforced? This Panel will provide the audience with a comprehensive overview of OOTC from the legal perspective (Peter Sacopulos), the horsemen’s perspective (Kent Stirling), the regulator’s perspective (Ed Martin) and the practicing veterinarian’s perspective (Dr. Clara Fenger). There will be time for questions at the conclusion of the presentations by the Panel.
