KY: Turfway Applies for Historical Race Wagering

Blood-Horse

Turfway Park has submitted an application for historical race wagering, according to an agenda for the Dec. 1 Kentucky Horse Racing Commission meeting.

If the application is approved, Turfway would become the fifth Kentucky racetrack to install the machines, which resemble video lottery terminals but are considered pari-mutuel under KHRC rules. Historical race wagering remains subject to a legal challenge by the Family Foundation of Kentucky.

Turfway’s majority owner is now Rock Gaming, which bought out partner Caesars Entertainment. Keeneland still owns a small interest in the Northern Kentucky track.

Other tracks that have installed historical race wagering machines are Kentucky Downs, Ellis Park, and the partnership of Keeneland and Red Mile, which operate one facility at the Lexington harness track.

Also on the agenda is Keeneland’s application to build a Quarter Horse racetrack called Cumberland Run in Corbin in the southeastern part of the state and also offer historical race wagering there. The project has been in the works for more than a year.
