The 12th annual New Vocations Charity Horse Show was a huge success with over 1,250 entries and $60,000 raised to support racehorse aftercare. The Indiana HBPA was the title sponsor of the event, which drew a record attendance. Many of the exhibitors came simply to show off their former racehorses in both the Thoroughbred specialty classes as well as open classes. Non-Thoroughbreds also competed, showing their support of New Vocations’ efforts.

“Thoroughbreds are amazing athletes that can excel in a variety of disciplines once they retire from racing,” said New Vocations Program Director Anna Ford. “This versatility is highlighted each year at the New Vocations’ show, which features dressage, hunter and jumper classes in a total of five rings over three days. Seeing all the Thoroughbreds and their owners competing at the same event is a true testament to New Vocations’ mission to rehab, retrain and rehome retired racehorses.”

Thoroughbreds with backgrounds ranging from one start to over 50, and no earnings to over $500,000, competed side by side, proving that they can excel in new careers beyond the track. Nearly $10,000 in cash and prizes was awarded through sponsors and the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program.

Among the 86 Thoroughbreds competing, several should be noted. Eighteen-year-old Wine Maker, who raced 89 times, was the War Horse Champion. Ohio-bred Chairman of Vice, with 16 starts and $6,700 in earnings, won the Thoroughbred Hunter Classic. Irish Deli, with 41 starts and $12,600 in earnings, was a star in the jumper ring, winning the Thoroughbred Jumper Stake. Lastly, AP Indy gelding, Uncle Indy, was crowned the Thoroughbred Dressage High Point Champion.

A number of industry partners, owners, trainers and breeders joined together to sponsor the event. This year’s key sponsors include the Indiana HBPA, Ohio HBPA, James and Anita Cauley, Homewrecker Racing, Bob and Jill Baffert, and 100% Racing. **The National HBPA is a class sponsor
