Equine Genetics Forum

Everybody is looking for “The Big Horse”. Is Genetics the Answer to finding that horse? Is it the Answer to improving the thoroughbred breed? This Forum will provide the audience with some thoughts on these questions and the current science of genetics and its practical use in thoroughbred horse racing. Dr. Steve Tammariello, from ThoroughGen (www.thoroughgen.com) will provide an overview of how genetics works and why it is important. Byron Rogers of Performance Genetics (www.performancegenetics.com) will speak about the practical uses of genetics as it relates to the thoroughbred industry. For additional information on this topic see the Spring 2014 issue of the Horsemen’s Journal, and the article by Shelby O’Neil entitled The Gene Genies contained in that issue of the Horsemen’s Journal. There will be an opportunity for questions at the conclusion of the Forum.

Retired Racehorse Project

Stewart Pittman will provide the audience with an overview of the Retired Racehorse Project (www.retiredracehorseproject.org), its history, current projects and the road ahead. He will discuss various aspects of preparing former racehorses for second careers in a variety of different equine disciplines. There will be an opportunity for questions at the conclusion of his presentation.

Growing the Fan Base Forum
The long-term welfare of the thoroughbred horse racing industry requires that we as industry stakeholders reverse the trend of our declining fan base. This Forum will provide the audience with an overview of a variety of different current and future projects which have helped and will help in the future to broaden the appeal of thoroughbred horse racing. Keith Chamblin will provide an overview of the growing popularity of handicapping tournaments and the demographics of the players who compete in them, including the National Handicapping Championship (www.ntra.com/nhc/) which will have prize money in excess of $2 Million Dollars this year. Asif Husain from Equisight (www.equisight.com) will discuss the potential use of “jockey cams” as a way to increase fan involvement and participation and giving the fan more access and control of the racing experience. Mark Giardino and Daryle Ann Lindley Giardino will discuss the making of their film “Behind the Gate” (www.behindthegatemovie.com) and what they hope to achieve via the film. Emmy Award-winning TV producer Stu Kirshenbaum (oakstreetfilms.tv) will discuss the importance of a clear, focused strategy for racing’s network TV time. Additionally, he will touch on his recent work with various state horsemen’s groups. This Forum promises to be educational and enjoyable. There will be an opportunity for questions at the conclusion of the Forum.

Alternative Equine Therapies

You can’t win races without a sound, health horse. Traditional veterinary medicine has its strengths and weaknesses. This Forum will provide the audience with an overview of several alternatives or supplements to “normal” racetrack veterinary medicine. Dr. Kim Rasmussen will provide the audience with an overview of equine Osteopathy (what it is, when and how it is used on horses and what results might be expected from such treatments). Dr. Mike Smith’s presentation will discuss the use of acupuncture on horses including how it is done, when it is done and what results might reasonably be seen from such treatments. Carrie Wagner (http://equine-magnotherapy.com) will speak about the use of Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) including what it does, what benefits it provides and its application to horses. She will also touch on the integration of thermography with PEMF. There will be an opportunity for questions at the conclusion of the Forum.

Managing the Export Authorization Process

This Forum will review the Interstate Horseracing Act, touch on the impact of the Ohio decision and review how five different consents/approvals must occur before an Interstate off-track wager is accepted on the races at your host track. Three Executive Directors will discuss the process followed by their horsemen’s groups to fulfill obligations under the Act.
